Cracking the Camping Code

New Zealand is an ultimate camping destination. During the summer months it is advisable to book ahead. Download the CamperMate app or visit the Department of Conservation DOC site. Also there are a few DOC offices that can help with the bookings. We found the average price to be from $26NZ/$16/person for DOC and $40NZ /$24USD for Holiday Parks. We also bought a month pass from the monthly DOC Campsite Pass which cost us $160 US (for both of us) which allowed us to reserve a site at over 195 campsite throughout NZ. Here are the 3 types of camping that we used throughout our stay.

Early Morning Campers
  • Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites can be found all around the country, often in remote wilderness areas. The facilities vary, but they all have stunning locations. DOC campsites are often found in the national parks and are near walking trails. Bathroom facilities range from non-flush to toilets and non potable water stations.

  • Holiday Parks provide powered and non-powered sites for tents, caravans and camper vans and motorhomes. Many also have simple cabins, self-contained motel units and backpackers' lodges. There are clean and well-maintained shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and are great for families, often equipped with heated swimming pools, play areas and barbecues.

  • Freedom Camping in New Zealand is considered camping in a tent, camper van or motor vehicle on public land, on a site with minimal or no facilities, such as toilets or showers. And its free as long as campers follow some basic rules when staying overnight such as always use a public toilet or the toilet in your vehicle, recycle at designated recycling facilities, empty toilet and waste water at designated dump station only. There are over 500 responsible freedom camping locations in New Zealand.
